An asymmetrical mirror only looks its best when it is hung well: at the right height, in the right spot, and fixed securely. Because the shape is irregular, the usual rules need a small tweak. Here is how to get it right.

The right height

As a general rule, the centre of the mirror should sit around eye level, roughly 150 to 165 cm from the floor. With an asymmetrical mirror, measure to the visual centre of the glass rather than the very top or bottom, since the outline is uneven. Above furniture, leave a gap of about 15 to 25 cm between the top of the console or sideboard and the start of the mirror so the two feel connected.

Finding the right spot

Before you reach for a drill, think about what the mirror will reflect. Aim it at a window, a plant or an open, tidy corner, not at clutter or a blank wall. Hold the mirror in place, or cut a paper template to its shape and tape it up, then step back and check the position from across the room and from the doorway.

  • A drill with the correct bit for your wall
  • Wall plugs and screws suited to your wall type, masonry, plasterboard or tile

How to hang it

  1. Mark the position of the mounting clips on the wall, using the mirror or your template as a guide.
  2. Check the marks are level with a spirit level, then drill and insert wall plugs suited to your wall.
  3. Fit the screws, leaving the heads slightly proud so the clips can sit over them.
  4. Lift the mirror onto the screws, settle it onto the clips, and check it is level once more.

For a heavier or full-length mirror, always fix into a stud or use heavy-duty fixings rated for the weight, and never rely on a single point.

Leaning instead of fixing

A full-length leaner can simply rest against the wall, which is relaxed and lets you adjust the angle. Even then, secure it with a safety strap or bracket so it cannot tip, especially in a child’s room or a busy home.
